What does solar power really cost? (Sun-Sentinel.com) The cost of a photovoltaic energy system, now about 9 cents per kilowatt hour (kwh), is higher than FPL's base charge for electricity. FPL, which uses natural gas, fuel oil, nuclear energy and other sources to provide electricity, bills residential customers more than 4.2 cents per kwh for the first 1,000 kwh each month and just over 5.2 cents after that.

Merrivale's solar car was constructed of a carbon fibre frame and balsa wood, and according to some onlookers was built to perfection, not coming off the track once.
