Solar power in space, why not on Earth?
(People's Weekly World) The U.S. space agency is already planning a solar-powered mission to study the atmosphere of Jupiter, and has looked at sending probes as deep into space as Neptune using only the Sun's energy for spacecraft and instrument power … It is all but certain the next U.S. deep-space missions will be solar-powered.

Solar Energy Week to Shine Light on Ways to Save Money
(San Diego Business Journal) Alternative uses of the sun's rays have been heating up discussion for Solar Energy Week, hosted by the nonprofit San Diego Regional Energy Office. The office provides information to promote using clean, sustainable and efficient energy technologies during the second annual Solar Energy Week, scheduled to run from Sept. 24 through 30.

Solar energy is flaring up
(Grand Haven Tribune) DuPont Co.'s announcement last month that it would spend $50 million to build a factory to make solar-panel components is a sign of boom times in the solar-energy industry. Much of the demand for solar cells is driven by government incentive programs that aim to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from fossil-fuel-powered power plants.

SunEdison to build solar farm
(Rocky Mountain News) Xcel Energy on Friday selected Baltimore's SunEdison to build the largest solar electric farm in Colorado. The 8-megawatt solar farm, capable of powering more than 2,600 homes along the Front Range and other parts of Colorado, would be built in the San Luis Valley near Alamosa. Xcel has said the project could cost an estimated $60 million and go online before the end of 2007.

Sold on solar: Silicon Valley leader of pact
(Wilkes Barre Times-Leader) As demand for clean energy rises around the world, the nation's high-tech hub is looking to squeeze more money out of silicon. Engineers and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley are taking advantage of their expertise in computer chips to design and manufacture electricity-generating solar cells that they hope will be increasingly competitive with traditional energy sources such as coal and natural gas.
