Will new Midland stadium be solar powered?
he sun was shining brightly Thursday, and some of that solar energy may power Midland's new baseball stadium. It could make the ballpark the first of its kind in the country. Construction on the $28 million stadium continues this week. The sun was beating down on construction workers Thursday, but the sun's rays may eventually be used to power a good portion of the stadium. Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor are working on a joint effort to make the ballpark a solar-powered stadium. "We don't believe there are any other stadiums in the U.S. that are powered by a solar energy kind of installation," said Dow Corning's Abbe Mulders.
Report Sees Solar Ready to Shine on Consumer Energy Markets
Solar power can deliver electricity to more than 2 billion people, provide over 2 million jobs with an annual investment of 113 billion euros (US$143 billion) by 2025, according to a report just published by Greenpeace International and the European Photovoltaic Industry Association. The report, titled "SolarGeneration" , also explains that 350 million tons of CO2 emissions would be cut - the equivalent amount from 140 coal power stations and by 2040, solar electricity could provide over 16% of the global demand. “Solar energy is on the brink of leading the highly competitive consumer energy market, therefore the industry must invest further now in mass production to bring the costs down,” said Teske.
Legislation for Million Solar Roofs Plan Signed by Schwarzenegger
Concluding a two-year effort to help make California the nation’s leader in solar energy, Gov. Schwarzenegger signed SB 1 by Senator Kevin Murray (D-Los Angeles), putting the finishing touches on the Governor’s Million Solar Roofs Plan. “When I ran for governor, I vowed to make the environment the centerpiece of my administration and turn back the clock on pollution,” said Gov. Schwarzenegger. “My Million Solar Roofs Plan will provide 3,000 megawatts of additional clean energy and reduce the output of greenhouse gasses by 3 million tons which is like taking one million cars off the road.
Two Billion Households Could Have Solar Power By 2025
Two billion households worldwide could realistically be powered by solar energy by 2025, according to a joint report launched today by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) and Greenpeace. The report concludes that thanks to advances in technology, increasing competition and investment in production facilities, solar power has now become a serious contender in the electricity market; able to provide low-cost, clean, CO2 emission free energy.
